Mindfulness & Self-Regulation

“BREATHING IN……BREATHING OUT…..Just bringing your full attention to the breathing, moment by moment….and breath by breath”. Practice this simple exercise for 60 seconds two or three times a day, to begin with.

Mindfulness requires intentionally bringing our full attention to the breathing, and to the experiences that occur in the present moment. Some of our empirical work at USF examines the question of  how a brief Mindfulness Meditation Intervention reduces chronic stress and promotes positive emotions and a sense of meaning and purpose in cancer patients.

Our Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program for breast cancer patients at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, is a six-week research program. The intervention offers systematic training to promote stress reduction by self-regulating attention and concentration to stressful experiences.  For  more information and scientific reports, please View publications page.

THE PERCEIVED EMOTIONAL DISTRESS INVENTORY

 A major portion of our research examines the cross-cultural assessment of emotions in cancer patients as well as non-clinical populations, specifically the Perceived Emotional Distress Inventory.  We also have available our cross-cultural measures of emotions, The Anger Expression and Hostility Inventory and the State-Trait Depression Inventory in the Spanish language.  Any request for information on our cross-cultural measures should be directed to:mmoscoso@health.usf.edu
